The Irish Sweep offers specialized services related to chimneys, fireplaces, fireplace inserts, and freestanding wood- or gas-burning stoves. We use proven techniques and the latest technologies to deliver excellent results on every project.

Our services include:

  1. Chimney Cleaning:
    1. We clean the inside of your chimney, from the firebox floor to the chimney top
    2. We use brushes on rods to clean the flue, hand brushes for the  firebox and smoke chamber, and a vacuum to control dust.
    3. We use video technology to enhance our ability to evaluate the chimney
    4. Annual service recommended

  2. Chimney Evaluations:The Irish Sweep conducts chimney evaluations according to guidelines set forth by the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). These classifications are:
    1. Level 1 Inspection
      1. Recommended if you have not changed - and do not plan to change - your heating appliance or system.
      2. Considered appropriate during annual service visit and during flue cap installation.
      3. Technicians do not need to use tools to open or remove doors, panels, or coverings, in order to examine the chimney exterior and interior.
      4. Technicians may need commonly available tools to examine portions of the appliance and the chimney connection - but the evaluation will not disrupt the chimney structure or finish.
    2. Level 2 Inspection
      1. Required when any change is made to your system - for example, before the flue is relined, or when you replace an appliance with another of a dissimilar type or efficiency level.
      2. Required upon the sale or transfer of property.
      3. Suggested when an operating malfunction or external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney or appliance.
      4. Does not require the removal or destruction of permanently attached portions of the chimney or building structure.
      5. Includes all services appropriate in a Level I inspection, plus the examination of accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior, including attics crawl spaces and basements.
      6. Includes a visual inspection by video scanning.
    3. Level 3 Inspection
      1. Conducted after a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection indicates a hazard in concealed portions of the chimney and flue.
      2. Involves the removal, and possibly destruction, of portions of the chimney or building structure, as necessary.
      3. Requires special tools and access to concealed areas of the chimney and flue.

Appointment Tips
Spring and Summer are the best times for non-emergency chimney repair and preventive maintenance. Here's why:

  • Most homeowners in the East Bay stop using their fireplace after the last rain - usually in early April.
  • From October through March, The Irish Sweep appointment calendar is booked up to two months in advance - making an "off-peak" appointment your best option.

As a courtesy, we send annual reminders for service, and confirm all appointments by phone 24 hours in advance.

Our hours of operation are:
April 1 through September 30: Tuesday through Saturday,  8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

October 1 through March 31: Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to  4:30 p.m.

Before Your Appointment:
24 hours
before your appointment, remember to:

  • Stop using your fireplace, woodstove, or gas stove. For safety's sake, we need to work with an appliance that is completely cool. As a courtesy, please remove all ash from the firebox.
  • Cancel or reschedule your appointment if necessary. We charge a service fee for missed appointments, or appointments canceled with less than 24 hours notice.

The Day of Your Appointment, remember to:

  • Keep pets and children away from the area where we will be working. This ensures their safety - and enables our staff work to work unencumbered.
  • Remove fragile or precious items from the area near the fireplace. If necessary, we can help you move furnishings.
  • Watch us work, if you'd like. Customers learn a great deal about chimney safety from watching us work, so we encourage it.
